Hostas can benefit from a second, lighter feeding in mid-summer to maintain vibrant green foliage, especially after flowering. Apply the same amount as you did in the spring, and administer the fertilizer immediately after the bloom cycle concludes.
When applying fertilizer in mid-summer, gently pull back the leaves to ensure the granular fertilizer reaches the soil around the plants rather than landing on the foliage, which can cause leaf burn. As in the spring, water the fertilizer in to help it settle around the plants.
Avoid fertilizing hostas in the fall, as it can stimulate late-season growth that may jeopardize the plant’s ability to overwinter successfully. Once summer ends, allow your hostas to grow naturally until the first frost triggers dormancy.
